The History of Sheffield Island Lighthouse

The Sheffield Island Lighthouse was built at the southern end of Norwalk Islands, also known as White Island. The island was purchased by Captain Robert Sheffield in 1804 but in 1826, a son-in-law of Sheffield sold 53 acres of the island to the United States government for the construction of the lighthouse. The lighthouse was completed in 1828 and it helped ships reach the island.

The lighthouse is a magnificent architecture during the time it was built. It was patterned from other lighthouses like those found in Great Captain Island and Morgan Point in Connecticut as well as those found at Old Field Point Light and Plum Island in New York.

The Sheffield Island Lighthouse was finally deactivated in 1902. By 1914, it was purchased by Thorsten O. Stabell. In 1986, it was purchased by Norwalk Seaport Association and they renovated and restored it so it can be used again. In 1989, the Sheffield Island Lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. By 1993, a generator was added to the lighthouse but in the same year, a great storm caused the basement of the building where some artifacts were stored to be destroyed.

It was operated once again by 2002 and the Seaport association already started a ferry service to the island and it continues to be a business to this day. In 2011, the lighthouse was used again and it was already ran with a solar-powered system. Today, the lighthouse is used only on the Norwalk side but not for navigation purposes.

The Alleged Suicide Of A Keeper Of The Sheffield Island Lighthouse

The 10-room Victorian-style lighthouse is said to have a troubled history. In 1972, one of the original keepers of the lighthouse died. The death was sudden and unexpected as he was just watching the passing ships with a spyglass. The death remains a mystery.

In 1991, a decade earlier before the Sheffield Island Lighthouse was used again, an archeologist reported a number of paranormal activities. One of which is the mystical music that came from the shores, cries for help from a distance, and the sound of a foghorn even if there is no such thing on the island. It is believed that some of these strange instances were the works of Captain Robert Sheffield.

The Spirit Of A Young Girl Who Is Said To Be Trapped At The Sheffield Island Lighthouse

There have been many paranormal experts who claimed that the spirit of a young girl is trapped in the Sheffield Island Lighthouse. The girl is believed to be the daughter of a keeper of the lighthouse.

Christine Kaczynski, a paranormal investigator who founded Connecticut Paranormal Research and Investigations, visited the Sheffield Island Lighthouse and she claimed that the girl is named Abigail and she is around 6 or 7 years old. Abigail is said to be bound to the island because of two adult ghosts, who are always wreaking havoc. Kaczynski shared, “I have no idea who Abby may be. She is bound to the lighthouse and she doesn’t seem to be able to make her way out of there because of the two other spirits.” Kaczynski further claimed that the farthest that Abigail can go is the beach and she visits it sometimes.

One spirit even followed their group throughout the property until they left at 2 in the morning during their visit. The spirits are said to be friendly and like the company of people.
