One of the most famous spots that locals and tourists want to visit is the Bell Witch Cave. This area is reportedly haunted and if you want to know more about the hauntings, continue reading below.
The History Of Bell Witch Cave
A farmer named John Bell, together with his wife and children, settled in the northern area in Tennessee sometime in 1804. They were able to acquire a farm that measured 320 acres. The first 13 years of living in the area was a peaceful life for the Bell family because they even became one of the richest families in their community.

However, during the summer of 1817, the family started seeing funny-looking animals that lurked around their property. Then at night, they would hear knocking sounds on their doors and walls. As time passed, more strange sounds were heard and this time it was inside the property. Accordingly, the family would hear the sound of chains being dragged throughout the house, gulping and choking sounds, the sound of stones being dropped on their wooden floors, and a rat chewing on the posts of their bed. The family did not want to let others know about these instances so they kept it to themselves for a year.
John later decided to tell his neighbor, James Johnson, about these mysterious happenings because he and his family could no longer take it. They invited James and his wife to sleep over for a few days and when they witnessed these strange things themselves, they told John it was best to tell more people about it. Later, a committee was formed to investigate the activities in the home of the Bells.

As more and more people came from near and far to witness the weird things happening at the home of the Bells, the force also gained strength to have a voice of her own. When she was asked who she was, she gave different answers. One time, the force claimed her name was Kate Batts and that she was the woman who was the neighbor of the Bells. The neighbor of Bells claimed she was cheated by John regarding a land purchase and on her death bed, she promised she would haunt John and make him pay. Since then, the force was named as Kate, the Bell’s Witch.
Later, when Kate was asked what her purpose was for disturbing the home of the Bells, she claimed that she had two goals. The first one is to kill John. The next is to stop John’s youngest daughter named Betsy from marrying a neighbor named Joshua Gardner.

For the next years, all the family members of the Bell family were tormented by Kate but John and Betsy received the most of the physical abuse from the force. Betsy received pinches, scratches, beatings, and the like. For John, he suffered from his throat swelling up and the feeling of having a stuck being stuck inside his throat. John also suffered jerking and twitching of his facial muscles and so he became weaker.
On December 20, 1820, John died. People believed Kate poisoned him and when she was asked about it, she took full responsibility for John’s death. In March 1821, Betsy also broke off her engagement with Gardner. Kate then left the home of the Bells but promised she would return in seven years.
She did return after seven years and talked with John Bell Jr. Kate was characterized as an intelligent force because she talked about the past and the future and even the bible. During her talk with John Bell Jr., Kate talked about the past, the present, and the future. She once again declared she will be leaving and will be back by 1935. Most people, however, believe that Kate never left because many strange things took place between the last time she said she was leaving and the time she said she was returning.
Later, the home of the Bells was torn down. The Historic Bell Cave, Inc. was then organized to preserve some of the original items from the home such as the chimney stone and their iron kettle. The location of the cave is near where the former property of the Bells stood. This is reportedly where Kate lives.

The Bell’s Witch Saved A Child
Kate isn’t always this mean force. According to some citizens, a group of friends were playing inside the Bell Witch Cave. One of the kids went deeper into the cave and got stuck in a hole. As the boy cried out for help, a voice allegedly shouted, “I’ll get him out!” This voice is believed to belong to Kate because the child claimed her invisible hands pulled him out of the hole.

A Visitor’s Experience At The Replica Cabin Of The Bells And At The Cave
Although the original cabin of the Bells was torn down, a replica cabin was put up. A visitor shared on her blog the following, “Although the home was not the original site, our EMF (electromagnetic field) detector started acting crazy, the lights zipping back and forth while we were in the front of the house. When we moved to another room upstairs, the EMF detector stopped for a few minutes as if whatever had been present was suddenly gone. At that time, I began experiencing a strange pressure on my neck/chest area near my throat that caused me to cough. The feeling intensified a couple of times and startled me to the point that I felt the need to take deep breaths. I knew that I was sensing something paranormal.”

Later, when the visitor left the cabin and was about to go into the Bell Witch cave, she “was overcome by a wave of nausea that did not subside until I reached the cave entrance.” While inside the cave, she also heard a group of children laughing although there weren’t any children in their group. She then asked the others if they heard the children’s laughter but no one else did.
